Buche on a bike? Dreams come true, courtesy of El Taco Bike

Why does Alfonso Dominguez, owner of Oakland’s Tamarindo, La Calle, and partial owner of Era Art Bar and Lounge, spend his free time hawking tacos from a bike? An avid cyclist and owner of six different bikes himself, we got the idea talking to him last week that Dominguez built El Taco Bike to prove it was possible in the first place.

We’re in full support. Too few snack foods come off the back of bicycles these days.

In fact, Dominguez’ brainchild is the first licensed hot food bike in the Bay Area — maybe even in the state, as far as he knows. That meant he basically had to write the book on how to make the thing pass health code. 

“They didn’t know how to process it,” he says.

Luckily, he’s trained in design. “If I could design a building, I figured I could make a bicycle.” It took eight months of back-and-forth, but finally the city felt he had a solid operation. The bike features compartments to keep his tacos warm, hot and cold sinks, a trash bin, a table to eat on — even a napkin dispenser. 

Also this: “I wanted to keep it traditional, real.” Dominguez has recreated a system that operates in virtually every developing country, street cooks who serve up snack on the back of bicycles. “There’s no food trucks in Mexico,” he continued. “But food bikes are everywhere.”

Accordingly, his tacos are authentically Mexican. Dominguez hawks steamed tacos de canasta, which translates to “basket tacos” — snacks that are kept in a warm basket and steam throughout the day to a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Dominguez’ treats are filled with papas, carnitas, and buche (pork stomach).

El Taco Bike has been rolling the downtown Oakland streets and out to private events (the bulk of business at this point) since the beginning of July. All the world loves a bicycle these days, so El Taco Bike seems like a pretty strong business plan. Dominguez has plans to attend the next East Bay Bike Party with his culinary contraption — and doesn’t expect to still be the only one in the bike food game come summer 2012.

“I’ve only opened the gates. Trust me, everyone’s been looking at that bike. Next summer it’s going to be crazy.” What’s next, bike samosas? We can only dream.

Community creates “The People of Burning Man”

Drawing on support from the larger Burning Man community, San Francisco-based photographer Julian Cash this month released a colorful and engaging new photo book entitled The People of Burning Man: Portraits of Revolutionary Spirits.

The self-published book got a big boost when Black Rock City LLC, which stages Burning Man, this summer used its huge Jack Rabbit Speaks email list to encourage burners to donate to a Kickstarter campaign that Cash used to fund the project.

The response was huge, with 521 people donating a total of $36,830, in the process earning gifts ranging from small tokens of appreciation to signed copies of the book to the four donors of more than $1,000 each who received, “A piece of art from the LARGE ART gallery. Five signed copies of the book. Each book will have custom illustrations along with the names of the people the books will be given to. Your name printed in the book large + other names printed that you chose. A strange mystery gift. The extras from previous levels. Absurdly massive appreciation, love, and the knowledge that this book is forever something you made exist!”

It’s a beautiful book – supported by a great website and committed community – so check it out.

Project Dog brings out the purebred in rescue dogs

“I once split my pants photographing a Finnish spitz on the cliffs above Sutro Baths,” the lovely, energetic Kira Stackhouse laughed over drinks at Blackbird Bar in the Castro last week. She was recounting some very interesting stories about her ambitious Project Dog — an attempt to meticulously photograph woofy representatives of all 170 official American Kennel Club registered breeds next to purebred counterparts from dog rescue agencies.

“A big part of my mission is to photograph as many of these dogs as I can in iconic San Francisco and Bay Area settings, sometimes I’m trying to shoot five or six dogs a day. It’s not like I travel around with a change of clothes –but apparently there’s no lengths I won’t go to! So I just tried to hold my legs together until I got the shot.”

Stackhouse, who left a high profile job in marketing to expand her Nuena Pets photography business, launched a Kickstarter campaign earlier this month to help fund a full-color coffeetable book that will come out of Project Dog. (The campaign wraps up in three more days.) I asked her to explain the motivations behind the project — which has become a viral hit in the Bay Area and beyond, and has garnered several local accolades —  and what she hoped to accomplish. 

“It was weird how the idea came about. I love pets, but I always thought of myself as more into cats — until I got a dog of my own a couple years ago and fell completely in love. The dog was a purebred from a breeder, a Boston terrier. And when I would take him out, people would give me such shit about not going to an animal rescue place.

“So I thought, ‘You know, most people don’t know that rescued animals can be purebred — or that almost all official breed groups contain rescue organizations.’ It dawned on me that one way to get this message out would be to start a project that gets these dogs side by side in a format that would be instantly recognizable and appealing to people.

“On top of that, I wanted this to be a community effort — so I asked people to submit their purebreds for picture consideration and tell stories about them on the Project Dog site. People really got into that — some of the stories are so funny, and we attracted entries from people like the mayor of Carmel! Then I could see what was out there and choose which dogs to photograph.

“But another community function I wanted to fulfill was building a platform to host the debate about purebred rescue dogs. People feel passionately — some owners are afraid rescue purebreds will diminish the ‘brand’ of the dogs, and some rescue dog fans are really vocal about their opposition to breed fetishization. This is somewhere they can all go at it.

And of course, I get to photograph some really beautiful dogs — and get really creative in a way I feel can benefit the community.”

It’s true, she does — some of the photos and test layouts for the book are stunning. But Project Dog, which is partnered with the SPCA, is also helping to enlarge perceptions of rescue dogs, usually knee-jerked as mangy mutts (not that those aren’t cute!), when in fact any kind of dog can find itself in need of a loving home. The Project Dog motto is, “Every dog is a work of art,” and Stackhouse’s dedication is proving that true.

Live Shots: Stepology at Herbst Theater, 8/21/2011

At most performance rehearsals, there isn’t the need to do a sound-check with the drummer and the dancers. At a tap show, it’s a must. The beats are coming from both parties, so those amps better be set to pitch perfect.

This past weekend, metal-soled kicks took the stage, for a performance by the very talented Stepology, a local tap dance organization who is trying to preserve those classic tip-tappity steps through its annual Bay Area Tap Fest program. I stopped by the Stepologists’ final rehearsal to get a taste of what they were up to, and was very glad I did. 

As a child, I had a large portrait of Fred Astaire in my bedroom (no joke!) and remember spending hours watching classics like Holiday Inn and Swing Time with my grandmother. They were such entertaining and silly movies. Those classics definitely had an influence on me, because I too took tap lessons and started dressing in long vintage skirts that made a perfect bell shape when I twirled.

Stepology is keeping that genuine spark of classy foot moves alive, while adding in some modern sensibility, with live contemporary music and clever originality. I’m sure anyone who sees the troupe perform will feel just a bit of nostalgia — and excitement for the future of this art form.

A great deal of photos from the Alamo Square Flea Market

The blue-threaded, stiff safari hat and the steel-lined canteen with the shoulder strap were hanging near each other on a metal railing at the 28th annual Alamo Square Flea Market. They were separated by a heavily-distressed grey motorcycle jacket, but surely hat and canteen had been tandem-teamed at some neo-colonialist theme party? I asked the gentleman vendor if that was the case.

It wasn’t. But he had sported the hat for a party recently, and he agreed the two bits of genteel ruggedness were a great pairing. In fact, he’d throw in the canteen for free. But first I had to buy the hat.

And so went the customarily predatory-laissez-faire dance of the flea market, brought for six overcast hours into the middle of the city, where there are not enough flea markets. But this was no flash in the pan — the Alamo Square affair has been around for decades, a smattering of vendors lining the treacherous path above Hayes Street, running along the southern edge of Alamo Square Park.

The winds were whipping around the flea market vendors Saturday morning but they, being the professional creatures that they are, had comfortable chairs to sit in, easy conversation starters for browsers fingering their baskets of $2 earrings, and ridiculously expensive starting quotes for the most unlikely of items ($45 for the alligator skin daschund purse? For shame, for shame). 

Indie Mart DIY-ers were there, as was the adoption ready pups from Rocket Dog Rescue, and terrarium craft tables overseen by neighborhood art clubhouse Workshop. 

I didn’t buy the hat (sorry boyfriend), but I will happily donate my new $2 earrings to anyone who can tell me why this isn’t a monthly event. 

Food cart captures: Snaps from the Street Food Festival

We still had five blocks to walk, but we could already smell the medley of exotic flavors wafting up the street. Sam Love and I were headed to the third annual SF Street Food Festival, which took over blocks and blocks of Folsom Street this past Saturday, bringing together street food vendors from La Cocina, San Francisco, and even a few from across the country to share edible wares with local foodies.

Signs lined the street, warning us to “pace yourself.” This was no joke. It was hard to decide where to start, but we chose to stick with the stars of the event: the entrepreneurial women of La Cocina. When we finally picked a vendor line to wait in, some of were snaking half way down the block.

We started with some tamales from Alicia’s Tamales Los Mayas. They were creamy and delicate, and as Alicia put it with a huge smile on her face, “stuffed with love.” We could have eaten a whole suitcase full of those babies. Yum!

Then we moved on to a more tactile eating experience, stopping at Eji’s Ethiopian Gourmet for some spongy injera topped with lentils and cabbage. Using the bread as utensil, we scooped the perfectly spiced veggies up, letting them drip satisfyingly down our chins.

After a pit stop for some agua fresca, we made one more beeline to Los Cilantos, to grab an elote (how had I never had one of these before!), which is roasted corn on the cob, smothered in mayo and parmesan cheese. So good. So good!

I have no idea how many zillions of people showed up for the festival on Saturday, but I do know that everyone at the stands was working their butts off to make sure no one went home hungry.

 

Appetite: Orson cocktails — worth a revisit?

Orson bar manager Ian Adams shows inspired vision in his cocktails. He’s having fun pairing them with a new four-course dinner, but even more so, his everyday cocktails shine with enough twists to keep me intrigued.

Amorosa ($10) comes on the stem in a champagne glass. It exhibits a rosy Campari and house cinnamon-rose kombucha hue, mixed with cachaca and housemade curacao. The elegant kombucha is not too vinegary, but adds a complex, unexpected layer to the drink’s gently bitter Campari finish. Refreshing and unique, I’d return for this one. A musky, playful course is taken in Ichi the Killer ($10): rye whiskey and lush amari are balanced with Peychaud’s bitters, then given that “little something extra” with pink peppercorn.

Orson is currently running a Blackboard Eats ​”Hotel California” special menu, a delightful concept of four-course meal with cocktail pairings, each drink and dish named after a line in the Eagles’ most famous song. The happiest pairing is “Can’t Kill the Beast”: maple-glazed roasted pig in a butter Tabasco sauce, over a can’t-go-wrong mix of cornbread, pickled peaches and broccolini. Fresno chilies are a genius touch from chef Elizabeth Falkner, nodding to California in a Southern-inspired dinner. “Far Away” is a shoo-in pork companion: bourbon, maple syrup, mint, and muddled peach make for a bright, bracing summer cocktail.

I appreciate the smoky, savory creativity behind the dessert cocktail, “Dance to Forget”, utilizing peat standard, Laphroaig 10yr scotch, rich with a house cherry brandy, spicy with ancho chili-infused chocolate and a bit of cayenne. Paired with Falkner’s “Last Thing I Remember” (chocolate, smoke, plum and a sweet black olive ice cream reminiscent of chocolate chip), it feels like the right way to end a meal.

We asked Jet Martinezthe mural artist, yesterday at the mural unveiling for “Amate” at the Mission Community Market:

“Soo… it’s all about loving yourself?” [Such is the title’s meaning in Spanish.]

Not really, kind of, not really. The word — depending on where you place the accent — can refer to auto-adoration, or to the brown paper on which many Mexican folk art designs are painted. Whatever the ultimate meaning of the title, Martinez’ new piece (there’s a gorgeous full shot of it here) is easily the most vividly colored wall we’ve seen in this city in a minute — it’s like those scenes in Disney movies where all the woodland forest creatures get frenzied-happy during the climax of a musical number. Make you wonder what song they’re singing.

“Amate” is not the only large-scale street art you should peep on the street (preferably while you’re heirloom tomato shopping with a greasily-transcendent pupusa balanced precariously in one hand). You perhaps know about Ben Woods’ recreation of a 1700s Ohlone mural from Mission Dolores — which sits directly next to Martinez’ creation.

Roa‘s three seals (there’s another stretched out along the bottom of the building, sorry I suck at taking photos) are amazing. 

And here’s a piece which has gotta be by Ben Eine (UPDATE: aaand it is), even though it’s not included on this White Walls map of the recent pieces the British artist painted around the city. Whoever did it, it appears to have garnered the attention of some paint-throwers. 

Word on the street from the Mission Community Market is that the organization is in talks with property owners of the condo-parking lot on the southwestern side of the block to liven up that surface as well. Pretty soon, we may have a block so colorful enough to match the MCM produce stalls.

Something strange popped up on an unassuming tree near the Guardian offices in Poterero Hill earlier this week. Walk up Mississippi Street, in between Mariposa and 18th Streets, and you will find a white sheet of paper taped to a trunk with neon green electrical tape. The sign warns bystanders of an attempt at time travel.

The picture is pasted here. I’ve also taken the liberty of typing it out for you.

I’m currently testing my time machine and if all goes according to plan expect to materialize
here at 1:30pm on Friday the 19th of August 2011.

This is just a courtesy note to make sure you’re not standing in this spot at that time. Things might get messy if you are.

I won’t be arrive in a Delorean, or be naked or be half man and half fly. This isn’t the fucking movies.

So what does this all mean? Is there a nut planning to do something freaky near us? It is an actual scientific endeavor? It is a marketing ploy (I’m usually quick to assume such things)? We’ll find out at 1:30 p.m. today and update this post. A crack team of Guardian editors will be on hand to find out the truth. It’s out there.

Update 1: Something does indeed look fishy, as suspected. Check out this conversation on Reddit. However, as dedicated time travel enthusiasts, we still plan to stake it out.

Update 2: HOLY CRAP, IT WAS AMAZING! There was a huge puff of smoke, and lasers, and unicorns, and roller skates, and books containing sports scores from the year 2012 … just kidding. What do you think happened? Until the next alien landing or chupacabra sighting ’round these parts, the Guardian’s X-files division will be returning to our regularly scheduled duties.

Vigilante Vigilante: The anti-anti-tagging movie

Fred Radke buffs Banksy and can’t stand public mural walls, even when they’re meant to inspire  hope in his post-Katrina NoLa. 

Joe Connolly deals with the death of his 11-year old son by zealously trucking around cans of paint and paint-removing chemicals, occasionally throwing up his own tag as a caution sign to the other, bad, graffiti artists.

Jim “Silver Buff” Sharp will even take down signs for lost dogs in his mission to purge Berkeley’s streets of DIY expression.

Meet your anti-graffiti activists, courtesy of a new film by Berkeley producers, Vigilante Vigilante.

The movie, shot over the course of 500-some days by Max Good and Nathan Wollman, gives a breathless history of people writing on walls (including a dubious reference to graff buffers back in the Paleolithic days), right up to modern day Bay Area strife – anybody remember the Warm Water Cove “clean-up”? The timeline focuses on the conflict between taggers and law-and-order types. If, in this age of JR and other highly-publicized and lauded street art, you don’t think is for real anymore, watch this video

Good capturing Sharp’s technique

The movie then moves onto Good and Wollman’s mission to expose the unaffiliated lone wolfs who spend their days erasing other people’s works of self-expression. They travel across the country, gaining surprising amounts of access to the three men’s routines.

But as it turns out, Vigilante isn’t down to use the middle-aged to elderly white guys they profile (add to this list a one “Silver Circle” from Portland, who is now retired) as the faces of evil. Instead, the movie couches its critique in the wack broken windows sociological theory – itself a tool used by elite populations to justify wiping clean the visible signs of any disenfranchised citizens. 

By the end of the movie, Good and Wollman are arranging meet-ups between the anti-taggers so that they can swap paint-matching and poster removal techniques. The scene is almost heartwarming: the anti-graffiti vigilantes, with their relentless schedules and dedication to their craft almost win the audience over. Even if we’re a little creeped out by them.

So who is the villan in all this? Vigilante Vigilante finds a plausible symbol of nefariousness: James Q. Wilson, the sociologist behind the broken window theory (the inspiration, by the way, for Rudy Giuliani’s 1990s purging of downtown Manhattan).

The producers were right to do so. For the community member upset that their neighborhood is poor, that their area’s youth are unemployed, that circumstances seem beyond their control, Wilson’s theory successfully obfuscates cause and effect, a standard conservative trick of defeating class consciousness. Graffiti doesn’t cause race riots, poorly-dealt-with natural disasters, or high unemployment rates. Writing on a wall is often the response to a society that belittles minority youth, the middle class and poorer, and anyone who is having trouble with the capitalistic treadmill. Jeff Chang‘s Can’t Stop Won’t Stop is a great place to start if you’re interested in this anti-colonialist view of street art.

The obsessive cover-ups of the vigilantes (that in more than one case have morphed into tags themselves, a fact the filmmakers highlight when they begin covering up Sharp’s silver buffs with neon pink and gold buffs, to his dismay), are ultimately their attempt at regaining control in a world that can seem really mean at times. Which doesn’t change the fact that what they’re doing is lame — can hardly blame this guy…

The Performant New York Edition: Forever Fringe

I’ve been flying all week and boy are my arms tired! But at last I’ve landed, soft in the lap of Brooklyn, from where I’ve been commuting to the 15th annual New York Fringe Festival (say that five times fast). 

Perhaps the largest multi-arts festival in the US, the New York Fringe hosts close to 1200 performances from 194 companies, spread out in 18 venues all over the Lower East Side. Fringers pack the sidewalks and the black box venues from Bleecker Street to the Bowery — just minutes away from Broadway, but light years apart in terms of budget, content, daring.

Hailing from as close to home as Downtown Manhattan to as far away as Australia, each company serves as an ambassador for the theatre scene in their region. Once again, the Bay Area is well represented, not to mention Tennessee (“The Disorientation of Butterflies”), Massachusetts (“Dancing in the Garden”), Kentucky (“Civilian”), Texas (“A.Chekov’s The Darling”), and Seattle (“Virtual Solitaire”), among others.

The possibilities for connecting with performances from around the world, not to mention from our own backyards, are practically endless, just one reason why fringe festivals have grown into the international phenomenon they have, having spread from Edinburgh, Scotland to every continent save Antarctica — and I wouldn’t rule that out as a future possibility.

Just a few days in and I’ve already been a silent witness to one woman’s eating disorder (Craving), been converted to Islam (All Atheists are Muslim), gotten an eyeful at not one, but two boob-related shows (Mama Juggs, The Booby Prize), cheered Rosaline on in Romeo and Juliet: Choose Your Own Ending, checked out a Zombie Wedding, dropped by a poetry reading given by way-underground poetess and public school security guard Molly “Equality” Dykeman (portrayed by Andrea Alton), and witnessed the birth of a preemptive celebrity biography in Mark Sam Rosenthal’s I Light up my Life

I’ve seen a washed-up and forgotten opera singer struggle with her past balanced against the future in The Unsung Diva, a stream-of-consciousness-spouting, post-existential “rabbi,” Moshe Feldstein, whose name has been lovingly smeared in excrement by one of his faithful followers (an act detailed in the “fan” mail he reads onstage), a trio of funny females being funny in Lipshtick, and a very funny, very crude, third-wave existentialist rant from Romania called Nils’ Fucked up Day.

This last piece to me is an epitome of the possibilities of fringe. Where else can “Romania’s most obscene play” find not just a foothold but some real acclaim without spending a fortune in venue rental, publicity, special visas, and all the rest? And where but at Fringe could your average, broke-ass arts lover get a chance to see “Romania’s most obscene play” for a ticket price roughly equivalent to a tepid Hollywood blockbuster with a tub of greasy popcorn on the side? Everybody wins at the Fringe in some way; even the foul-mouthed losers portrayed in Nils (except maybe the guy who is beaten to death with a baseball bat).

Sweet streets: Gelatin dessert art at this weekend’s Street Food Festival

As the foodie masses descend on the Mission for Sat/20’s Street Food Festival, they’ll be met with a diverse representation of what San Francisco eats. In this corner, fancy brick and mortar spots: Slanted Door, 15 Romolo, and Rye are but a few representatives of the eateries that are taking grills and spatulas into the fresh air this weekend. But for sheer culinary comeliness, the big guys have a serious contender when it comes to Sweets Collection arty gelatin creations. 

Graduates of the La Cocina street food incubator program will total a solid 50 percent of the 60 vendors in attendance at the festival. The varying styles of food preparation are meant to express the breadth of eats in San Francisco, but also to reinforce the fact that the huarache you buy at your local farmer’s market has the culinary chops to stand up against many places that take Visa.

According to the website, in a perfect world the festival would “get rid of all the white tents, and just do it block party style, but that’s not so cool with the Health Department, so you will have to imagine it with us.”

Rosa Rodriguez would surely be invited if the fest turned into a block party. She lives in the Mission, and has been creating her Sweets Collection intricate gelatin creations, in which graceful flowers bloom in edible gel, for a year now. We mentioned certain circumstances under which her treats might prove particularly awesome in the paper today, and here’s more on Rodriguez from an email interview we conducted with her last week. (You can also check out food writer Virginia Miller’s adventuresome picks for the fest here.)

SFBG: Tell us a little about yourself. How did you start Sweets Collection?

RR: My name is Rosa Rodriguez, I have two children, one is 15 years old and named Dayra, and Hasam is eight years old, we are from Durango, Mexico. I’m a single mother. When we are not doing artistic desserts, my children go to school and I take English classes and work on my business. I became unemployed in 2009, and in 2010 I had the idea of starting my own business to cover household expenses and share the art of my greatest passions.

 

SFBG: Can you tell us a little about gelatin art?

RR: Arte floral en gelatina has become a centerpiece of Mexican culture. Evening parties in Cancun often have intricate gelatin dessert flowers served in glass, personalized gelatin desserts are in demand at corporate events in Mexico, and no birthday is complete without fun gelatin designs on the cake.  

 

SFBG: Most of your work I’ve seen is of flowers. Do you do any other kinds of designs?

SFBG: What are you bringing to the Street Food Festival this weekend?

RR: Sweets Collection will participate by offering fanciful jello shots at two bars that will be located on Folsom and 23rd streets. But we also have a booth on that intersection, selling designs that the entire family can enjoy. Last year was my first year, like me, many people were impressed by the art to gelatin and I hope that this year more people came by our Booth , to know and taste the art you can eat.

 

SFBG: What does it taste like?

RR: This artistic dessert is made with passion. They’re handcrafted and they taste how they look… delicious.

Appetite: A mouthwatering preview of the SF Street Food Festival

La Cocina‘s SF Street Food Festival keeps getting bigger each year. Gearing up for this Saturday’s (8/20) third annual street food extravaganza, prepare for a takeover of numerous Mission blocks (free admission, with food for purchase under $8). This year there was an early sneak peek for media and select guests. There will be much to love at this year’s festival. Many food truck and street food favorites return, plus Ferry Plaza stars like Namu. Just a few stand-outs the new-to-this-year front:

Wax moth larvae tacos from Don Bugito – These pretty, little tacos are laden with crispy larvae, garlic, pasilla chiles, and pickled onions. Some popped them in their mouths without realizing what they were, others turned away once they heard… but to taste them is to be converted. No need to fear bugs in the hands of owner, Monica Martinez. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter.

15 Romolo’s jambalini – I’ve been touting 15 Romolo since day one. One of our city’s best bars is also home to some of the best bar food (just try their Challah at ‘Cha Boy, Nutella lathered on challah bread with fried bananas, bacon, and pickles!) The jambalini (jambalaya croquettes) are fried balls in the style of Italian arancini, with a Creole aioli for dipping. This has been a top bite at the bar for years. Thankfully, it’s also at this year’s Street Food Fest.

Rye on the Road’s Lawrenceburg swizzle & spicy paloma – You’d want Rye on the Road at any party. The experts behind beloved bars 15 Romolo and Rye are handling the bars at Street Food Fest. Watch for the snow cone-like fun of a lawrenceburg swizzle: Wild Turkey 101, maple syrup, lemon, Creole bitters, garnished with mint. Or go for a little heat with a spicy paloma: tequila, grapefruit juice, jalapeno syrup, salt.

Azalina’s Malaysian bites
Azalina‘s fills the far too vacant Malaysian food gap with a few Malaysian items, including a creamy, savory coconut chicken curry on green onion buns, perked up with spice, cut with blueberry cucumber pickles.

For the first time, there will also be six mobile vendors from across the country: The Peached Tortilla (Austin), The Arepa Lady (New York), Big-Ass Sandwiches (Portland), Skillet Street Food (Seattle), La Cocina grads Global Soul (Los Angeles), Ingrid’s Lunch Box (Madison).

Passports ($50-$250) offer discounts on food and eliminate cash purchases or you can just stop by for a couple individual bites.

Litquake welcomes Chelsea Handler to the reading list

There is no better evidence of the fact that we Americans like to be put in our place than the popularity of Chelsea Handler. The comedian tears through the guests on her talk show Chelsea Lately, penalizing those who’d knee jerk-lump a beautiful blonde into the airhead category.

And hey masochists, she’s coming to Litquake on October 13.  

It’s true, our little lit fest that could — which has exported the Valencia Street LitCrawl tradition to Austin and New York — is growing like the in-process Mission Bay skyscrapers. Only it doesn’t threaten to block our offices’ view of the Bay!

Lately (check out her SFBG interview from last year here, by the way) will be sitting down for a chat with LitQuake co-founder Jane Ganahl to discuss authordom, vodka, and male groupies. Perhaps Handler seems like an odd choice for the fest given scribeful line-up mates like Jeff Chang, Karen Russell, Jefferey Eugenides, and Deepak Chopra, but the facts remain: the woman runs the best-seller lists, balances writing with a thriving TV career, and recently scored her own publishing imprint from Hachette Books. This, anemic bloggers and thoughtful bards, is what one brand of successful writing looks like.

Can’t wait for the author talks and hawking of books? Our own City Editor Steven T. Jones will be pumping his Burning Man book at tomorrow (Wed/17)’s Litquake Epicenter event at Intersection 5M.

An unresponsive landlord could mean the end of Sixth Street’s DA Arts

“When I was growing up, the space was empty the whole time.” And as it stands, Sixth Street resident and photographer Reynaldo Ruetas Cayetano Jr. will be seeing the storefront gallery where his collective Inks of Truth created a community art project stand empty once again. 

“No one’s even been back in to turn off the lights,” he told the Guardian when he stopped by our offices last week. On August 6, Inks of Truth was holding a release party for its new zine – until the owner of 135 Sixth Street (which also houses the Sunshine Hotel, an SRO) stopped by to kick everyone out.

Cayetano grew up across the street from the DA Arts building, which occupies a central space on Sixth and Minna streets. It was once a liaison office for the city’s district attorney, filled with file cabinets. But the space became a creative hub in 2006 when Tenderloin Housing Clinic started leasing it to display art by local residents. 

Years of gallery shows culminated in THC turning artistic control of the space over to Ujima Artists, a group that hosted four to five shows before, THC artistic director Patrick Flanagan remembers, members began squatting in the small space, which faces onto Sixth Street and has massive windows. 

“It was a total party scene,” says Flanagan, who told the Guardian he ignored the misuse until he found crack vials in the gallery. Ujima Artists were kicked out, but the PR damage done to the gallery may have been too late to correct.

But Cayetano was ready for his crack at DA Arts. He contacted Flanagan, and within a month Inks of Truth had cleaned out the space. Mikio “Ears” Rose airbrushed galaxy designs across the walls, and on April 1 of this year, the group held a block party that attracted young artists, older Sixth Street residents, and everyone in between. On the gallery walls: black-and-white photos of the neighbors that rendered Sixth Street in all its grittiness, but also showed all the striving and community on the block.

“Not everyone can just go in there and have this community event. Knowing how my neighborhood is, I wanted [the people that live on Sixth Street] to be comfortable,” says Cayetano. 

Inks of Truth made a concerted effort to include everyone – not just artists and conventional art lovers, but the low-income elderly folk and those dealing with addiction. The gallery became a space for those who’d never shown an interest in art before, passers-by excited by their likenesses on the wall asking collective members where they could get a camera of their own.

Cayetano says his events rendered the neighborhood become a more inclusive place. “Basically, every time we had a show at DA Arts we all had a hood pass.”

But was the gallery’s owner impressed by the changes taking place on his ground floor?

Apparently not. When Flanagan, Cayetano, and Inks of Truth member Chris Beale attempted to set up a meeting with the owner of DA Arts and the Sunshine Hotel about extending THC’s lease on the place past May 28, Surajnaben Indrasinh Solanki was less than enthusiastic. In fact, he would hardly get back to them at all. 

“The guy’s not saying anything. He’s not even giving us an offer,” says Flanagan, who along with the Inks of Truth members left phone numbers and messages for Solanki at the Sunshine Hotel’s front desk to little avail. (The Guardian had a similar experience – Sunshine Hotel staff would hang up on us when we called to speak with Solanki, and leaving contact information in person at the front desk didn’t yield a call back). 

Eventually, the three managed to set up a meeting with Solanki on August 1. When the day came, he stood them up. 

“It reflects his style of overseeing that space,” says Cayetano.

Later that week Flanagan (who lives across Minna Street at the Rose Hotel and flips the lights on at DA Arts every evening to illuminate the corner and the art inside the gallery) ran into Solanki. “He told me not to go into the space, that we weren’t supposed to be in there, and that’d he call the police.”

Which Flanagan could have done – but he didn’t. “The ball’s was in his court,” he told the Guardian, frustrated that Solanki wouldn’t communicate with the Inks of Truth team about the future of the building. “So I said, let’s keep putting on shows.” 

When asked why he thought Solanki didn’t express any interest in the young people holding their events at DA Arts, Flanagan had two theories: that the owner is reluctant to get involved in any more leases because he’d like to be able to sell the building (which is in a SF Redevelopment Agency project area), or maybe because he was wary of Flanagan’s history as a tenant organizer. 

At any rate, Flanagan told Cayetano to go along with the previously-scheduled zine release party. 

So they did – and for a few hours, Inks of Truth and the rest of Sixth Street got to see their images published and bound (you can too – go here for a copy of Sixth Sense). That’s when Solanki finally showed up, yelling for everyone to get out. 

The collective grabbed everything from the gallery – framed photography, boxes of zines, the bottles of red wine that were being shared, everything but the Best of the Bay award they’d won the week before – and migrated across the street to Rancho Parnassus, a cafe that’s hosted Inks of Truth shows in the past. 

There, they rearranged the photos on the cafe tables and regrouped. Cayetano hyped the group up for October’s Sixth Street art walk, and reassured everyone that Inks of Truth would still have a presence on Sixth Street, with or without DA Arts. 

Reflecting on the tribulations the collective has undergone, Cayetano’s not ready to let go of his dream of bringing pride to his neighborhood. “We’re not here just to have a show and disappear,” he says. “Sixth Street is the heart for me.”

 

Live Shots: GAPA Runway 23, 08/13/2011

Fantasy Land was out in full force on the Herbst Theater stage this past weekend, for the 23rd annual Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) Runway show and 2011 Mr. & Miss GAPA pageant. The contestants were dressed to impress and pulled out all the stops (and pulled off a few pairs of pants too), in hopes of winning over a panel of judges that included everyone from socialites like Holy McGrail and politician Fiona Ma. Everyone was bedazzled, especially by the host Tita Aida.

Working with a cold and a pesky iPad, Tita held the whole event together with elegance and poise, and enough inappropriate jokes to keep everyone laughing and wetting their panties for the entire four hours of the show. I hope to one day call Tita a BFF. Tita is my heroine, not only for her amazing style, but also for her never ending list of Daly City jokes.

And then there were all the sexy Gaysian fantasies on the runway, dressed in fairytales of Snow White and genies, who really gave their all. One of my personal favorites was an evocative and devastating performance by Jezebel Patel of the Dying Swan, feathers spewing in every direction after each perfectly performed pirouette. She was a runner up for Miss Gapa, but the gigantic trophies at the end of the night went to two wonderful talents, Lychee Minelli and Mike Nguyen, who stole the show with their school-girl good looks and baton twirling triumphs.

I’ve been to a pretty solid sampling of drag shows in my day, but I have to say, GAPA Runway was magical in so many ways and one that I hope to make a yearly tradition.
