Literally, as I was polishing up my blog for tonight’s Human Be-In,
I got a call from Michael Bowen, a key organizer with Allen Cohen of the original Human Be-In on January 14, l967.
He is now living in a house ten minutes out of Stockholm, Sweden.

Bowen had lots to say about the Be-In and the era but he noted there was one key piece of information that has not been published and remains unknown: the issue of how the hippie group got a permit to put on the event in Golden Gate Park. He told me the story, yet another San Francisco classic, and I asked him to write it up for me and send it to me in time for the event tonight. The teaser: the permit read a “Birthday Party for Mel Belli and friends on the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park.”

As a participant in Friday night’s Human Be-In, the pre-40th Anniversary “Summer of Love” event on Sept. 2,
I plan to provide a bit of revolutionary poetry/journalism (my phrase) from my old friend and journalism colleague, the late Allen Cohen. Allen was the editor of the Oracle during the Summer of Love in l967 and a major organizer of the Human Be-in in Golden Gate Park.

He also published and pioneered what I considered the most colorful newspaper in the world at that time.
And how he did it was a San Francisco classic. The Oracle was printed by the Howard Quinn Co., at 298 Alabama Street, along with the San Francisco Bay Guardian, the Black Panther paper, the Berkeley Barb, and a host of underground papers and alternative papers of the era.

One night the Oracle staff came in with their flats and asked the pressmen, a rough and tumble crew, if they could get some special color in the paper. The hippies, some in bare feet, wanted this and they wanted that and they were rapidly driving the pressmen crazy. Finally, the pressmen just waved them to the press and said in effect, go ahead, do it your way. So the Oracle hippies went to work and put all kinds of colored dyes in all of the ink wells on the press, with no consideration for what color went where. The result was a rainbow of colors, all kinds, splashed across the front page and every page in the paper. The Oracle was an immediate sensation, on the streets and amongst mainstream newspaper people still tied to the old-fashioned letterpress printing.

Allen was creating a revolution in newspaper printing at the same time he was promoting a cultural and anti-Vietnam war revolution with the politics of the Be-in.
His wife, Ann Cohen, wrote me that “the media this year has left out how the Be-In came to happen and it feels as if it will go down in history as just a big party.” So she sent me a piece he did at the time on the politics of the Be-In and a letter, dated Jan. 1, 1967, asking Art Kunkin, editor of the LA Free Press, to publish an announcement
of the Be-In and “help the echoes of this event reverberate throughout the world.”

Allen crystalized a key issue of the time: that there was a “philosophical split that was developing in the youth movement. The anti-war and free speech movement in Berkeley thought the hippies were too disengaged and spaced out. Their influence might draw the young away from resistance to the war. The hippies thought the anti-war movement was doomed to endless confrontations with the establishment which would recoil with violence and fascism.”

The idea was to have a Be-In, a “powwow,” to bring the two poles together and to strengthen the youth movement and bring on the “revolution.”

Omar’s Post

A few months ago we profiled an Iraqi journalist named Omar Fekeiki, who escaped Baghdad to attend j-school at UC Berkeley, with the hope of returning to Iraq to be with his family and start his own newspaper.

Will the pro-parking Prop. H remain on the ballot?

Livable City executive director Tom Radulovich has asked the city Elections Department to remove the controversial pro-car measure Prop. H from the fall ballot after discovering a fairly significant misstatement of city law in the ballot summary that its downtown advocates circulated to get on the ballot. The measure, funded by Republican Don Fisher and condo developer WebCor, invalidates most city parking policies and drastically expands people’s rights to build parking spots.
The summary, prepared by the City Attorney’s Office, said current law allows at least one parking spot for every four housing units in the downtown districts and up to one spot for every three units. But as Radulovich’s letter (which follows) indicates, city law actually allows up to one parking spot per unit in downtown residential zones and two spots for every three units in the commercial C-3 zone downtown.
Guardian phone calls to the City Attorney Office, Elections Department, and Prop. H advocate Jim Maxwell have not yet been returned.
Political consultant Jim Stearns, who is running the campaign against Prop. H, told us state law requires the city to remove the measure. He cited the precedent of City Attorney Dennis Herrera last year invalidating a successful referendum drive challenging the creation of the Bayview Hunters Point Redevelopment area because those circulating petition didn’t carry with them the complete plan, only the ordinance that approved it. If the city doesn’t remove the measure, Stearns said opponents will seek a court injunction doing so.

Step in and look around: A talk with ArtSpan’s Therese Martin

In the Visual Art section of this week’s Fall Arts Preview, San Francisco Open Studios gets a shout out. I recently talked with Therese Martin, Executive Director of ArtSpan, about Open Studios, and about ArtSpan’s role in helping Bay Area artists. We also discussed art by ‘hood, and people who visit 75 artist studios in one weekend.

Guardian: How do you feel Open Studios is different from many art events in the Bay Area? I’d guess that while it’s larger, it’s can sometimes be more direct in terms of a chance to meet with artists.
Therese Martin: It’s definitely different because of the number of artists involved in so many different neighborhoods. It’s something you can participate in and not move beyond the 2 or 3 neighborhoods you normally go to.
The personal connection is unique. You really have the opportunity to shake the hand of a creative person. Even if you’re in a studio that’s not the living pace of an artist, it’s still a very personal space.

Awesome hair

Last night I saw Imaad Wasif’s latest band Two Part Beast open for Brian Glaze and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Fillmore. The trio includes drummer Adam Garcia of Timonium and a really cool bass player named Bob.

During their set, someone yelled out “You have awesome hair!”

I’ve been watching Imaad thrash around on stage for, gosh, at least 10 years now and I can attest that his hair has always been truly awesome, whether he was playing in Alaska!, New Folk Implosion, or that Cars cover band I saw at a party one night.

And, apparently, his early days playing weird angular-sounding chords in Lowercase, a really intense kind of old-school emo duo with drummer Brian Girgus, has served his songwriting well. The show was passionate, the songs a mixture of beautiful and moody hard rock. Check out some demos on myspace.

Imaad has been touring with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as a second guitarist since last year. It was my first time seeing the fasttrack-to-fame Brooklyn band at all, and I couldn’t take my eyes off of the magnetic Karen O, so don’t ask me what everyone else was doing for the rest of the night.

High-risk headbanging

The Toronto International Film Festival posted their schedule today, and among the docs is something called Heavy Metal in Baghdad — a behind-the-scenes look at Acrassicauda, “the only Iraqi heavy metal band.” (And, I’m guessing, one of few Iraqi bands, period, these days.) Watch the trailer here. As you can see, co-directors Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi (Vice magazine co-founder; the film is produced by mag affiliate VBS.tv) went the distance for the story. Which is, you know, totally metal of them. Before it became a feature, parts of the doc comprised a YouTube series of the same name.

TIFF is pretty reliable insofar as booking the big music docs that soon make their way to San Francisco — Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey in 2005; American Hardcore in 2006. I’m definitely gonna catch it when I head to the fest in a few weeks…stay tuned.

High-speed rail’s split decision

The California High Speed Rail Authority will hold a hearing in San Francisco City Hall tomorrow (Thursday/23) at 4 p.m. to take public input on the study of two possible Bay Area alignments for the high-speed rail line, the first of six such meetings in Northern California. At issue is whether the line coming from the Central Valley should go over Pacheco Pass or Altamount Pass, and both options have large and vocal constituencies, so it should be a tough call. You can do your homework here before weighing in.
The CHSRA ended up getting about $20 million in the just-approved state budget, although it’s possible that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (who, as we’ve reported, has been the project’s biggest obstacle) could still line-item veto the expenditure. But the $10 billion high speed rail bond measure is still on the November ’08 ballot, the politics of which make the Bay Area alignment decision a crucial one for the CHSRA. So come weigh in on a project that is crucial to addressing global warming, air quality, and freeway and airport congestion and expansion over the coming decades.

The great Oz speaks

True, Frank Oz has made his living for the last twenty years as a director of glossy, big-budget Hollywood comedies: from the mega-hits (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, What About Bob?, In & Out) to the occasional colossal flop (The Stepford Wives). And for the discerning nerd, Yoda always he will be. But for me, it’s hard not to meet the man and think of him as anything but a pig. Oz not only provided the voices of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and the Swedish Chef, among other classic Muppet characters, he’s also a master puppeteer in his own right.

So how to “keep the Muppet questions to a minimum” as instructed by the publicist on the occasion of his new movie, Death at a Funeral? (Especially when Oz himself makes an off-the-cuff remark about going “whole hog”? Well, it helps that Funeral is actually pretty amusing. An ensemble farce about a repressed English clan attending the funeral of a patriarch with a scandalous secret, the film features British vets like Rupert Graves, Robert Vaughan, and Ewen Bremner, plus American actors Peter Dinklage and Alan Tudyk (a standout). I sat down with Oz to discuss the movie, his desire to become a master of the “dark” arts, and other things (sigh) no
Muppet.

Be-in pre-Summer of Love event

Be human
We live in no less confusing times than our counter-culture progenitors of the ’60s did. Last Sunday, August 18th the commemorative Summer of Love event that was scheduled was postponed due to complicated permitting procedures. The postponed event is not to be mixed up with the September 2nd, blockbuster event, which is still on. There is a pre-love event this Friday, a revival of the “Human Be-in” event that took place on the foggy Golden Gate polo field on January 14, 1967 and eventually went down in history as a defining moment of the decade. Folks who were actually there (though might not actually remember it) will be in attendance: folkie Country Joe McDonald, Grateful Dead manager Rock Scully, pro-pot former District Attorney Terence Hallinan, pirate radio DJ and Buddhist thinker Scoop Nisker, our very own editor and publisher of the Bay Guardian Bruce Brugmann and many more will participate in the “be-in.” Several hundred of the Council of Light members, who have been organizing the September 2nd 40th anniversary event, will be there too. Eric Christensen, a former KGO TV producer, moderates. The Eye Witness Blues Band performs.

Boom, dream, flow: A look at Independent Exposure’s animation

The exact moment when I decided to study cinema is very clearly imprinted in my memory. It occurred three years ago while I was watching Man Ray films.

What impressed me most about films such as Return to Reason, Ballet Mécanique, and Emak Bakia was the potential they seemed to add to the film medium. Strange, almost indistinguishable forms and shapes danced around on the screen to generate equally mysterious inner associations. Though at times this colorful and playful montage of images didn’t make sense, at least not in the conventional way that films are supposed to make sense, they had deep impact on my perception.

Independent Exposure‘s Animation Edition 2007 —a series of short animations series that Microcinema Inc. has compiled on DVD and will also be showing all around the world—made me relive that moment. All fifteen shorts are exceptional not only for their subjects and the imaginative manner in which they’re treated, but also simply for their aesthetic value.

Wicked, wicked wikis

OK, who read the NY Times article about wikiscanner, the new website that makes it possible to track who’s editing Wikipedia entries?

Very interesting. We, of course, checked to see if our neighbors over at PG&E happened to be editing Wikipedia entries, and if so, which ones.

Heck yeah. Looks like someone over there has made it a regular hobby. Everything from solar power to — ha ha — pubic lice.

The site takes a little savoir faire to navigate, but if you put in the name of a company you’re curious about their IP addresses will come up. Then hit the little [wp] and it will list the entries that particular IP address edited. Then if you hit the [diff] it will show you exactly how they were edited.

There are some real gems from the minds of some PG&E employees — I had no idea that Robert Novak is also known as the “Douche Bag of Liberty.” Or that reality TV star Heidi Montag has a thing for Gremlins after midnight and that’s why she’s hot for Spencer Pratt.

Now, you could draw a lot of speculations from all of this. Here’s one: PG&E employees have too much time on their hands. Remember that when PG&E is making claims that the city could never meet or beat its electricity prices.

Who knows — maybe the boss said to make sure our company and all the shitty things we do looks good on Wikipedia, but clearly this person has other interests and is perhaps more of a sportsfan than a solar energy proponent.

Talk about needing to “move on ….”

Joe Alioto to take on Big Oil in court

Just received early word that in-your-face antitrust lawyer and local swell Joe Alioto will be filing a gargantuan class-action suit tomorrow in federal court against some of the largest players in the global oil racket accusing them of fixing gasoline prices and destroying documents that showed evidence of the collusion.

The defendants will include Shell Oil Company, Chevron Corporation and Saudi Refining, Inc. and the suit alleges that they artificially increased the price of gasoline for more than 20 gas stations throughout California, whose owners are acting as the plaintiffs, by 50 to 60 percent. “Plaintiffs paid significantly higher wholesale prices for branded gasoline when the price of crude oil fell,” a press announcement reads.

The suit will state that the defendants formed two companies in a joint venture in 1998, Equilon and Motiva, the former a partnership between Shell and Saudi Refining and the latter made up of Shell and Texaco. Both refine and distribute wholesale gasoline and other fuels.

Alioto represented local businessman and former political consultant Clint Reilly in his antitrust suit against MediaNews Group and the Hearst Corp. after the two announced a massive investment scheme that enabled MediaNews to last year buy up several Bay Area daily newspapers with $300 million from Hearst. The suit was settled earlier this year with mixed reviews.

The latest Big Oil suit will officially be announced tomorrow on the federal courthouse steps in San Francisco at 2 p.m., 450 Golden Gate Ave.

Chronicle hits Burning Man…badly

The San Francisco Chronicle leads the Sunday paper with a hit piece on Burning Man, wrapping several disparate points under the implied thesis that there is financial corruption in the organization. But the journalism and logic employed by writer Justin Berton and his editor is so bad and misleading that it says more about the Chronicle than Burning Man.
The most egregious example is the pull quote that leads the full-page jump: “This is not a financially healthy organization. If I were a donor, I’d think long and hard before I sent money their way,” Sandra Muniutti, Charity Navigator analyst.
It sounds as if she’s talking about Black Rock City LLC, which stages the event, rather than the event’s nonprofit wing, Black Rock Arts Foundation, which she analyzed. (Full disclosure: my girlfriend Alix Rosenthal is on the BRAF advisory board, although most of my knowledge on this issue comes from years of reporting work I did for the Guardian and my own attendance at Burning Man).
It’s classic bait-and-switch journalism, conflating two organizations to make a point. It’s also bad journalism because it lacks context on why BRAF gave just 27 percent of their revenue to artists. Here’s the context: most of BRAF’s work has been to place artwork that already been built — in most cases with art grants from BRC — around San Francisco, a task at which BRAF has been more successful in recent years than any group in town.
But the Chronicle, by dishonest implication, would have you believe just the opposite is true.

Naked Ambition and the Mayor’s Race: Full Frontal

George “Naked Yoga Guy” Davis started to take off his clothes the minute he filed for the Mayor’s Race, but last night he gave us the full scoop, beginning with the apron he wore during the mayoral debate that featured a full frontal shot of Michelangelo’s David, then getting down to his birthday suit inside City Hall around 7 PM, outside R. 200, which is the Mayor’s Office. Only this time, he struck a pose in the style of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.

Mayor Gavin Newsom, of course, was nowhere to be seen, having been whisked off hours earlier, presumably through a side door, since no one saw him leave the building. It was, for sure, a handy escape, since that way Newsom didn’t have to face Davis’ body, or other naked truths like the unflattering realities about Gavin’s San Francisco that emerged from the statements made by the eleven mayoral candidates who did show up outside City Hall. Lke the inimitable h.brown.

Oh, twitch-twitchy fingers, still trembling and stumbling over the keys, 24 hours after spinning out of the Fillmore, poster in hand and blazes in my heart! That’s right, my little shit-starters – Wednesday’s spilling into Thursday, and I’m still racing to find the words for Tuesday! Tuesday night, Aug. 14, to get right to it. For good reason. I mean, this doesn’t just happen every day, now, does it? It, of course, being Patti Smith. The Fillmore. Church.

Well, I’ll call it church, anyway. What with me being an eye-rolling skeptic-of-everything atheist and all, the sheer unstoppable deliverance of a quasi-orgasmic rock ‘n’ roll experience is the closest my scripture-wary ass ever comes to ecstasy, and who better to carry me over to the Promised Land for a few hours than the one for whose sins Jesus never died in the first place? Rapture, you say? Rupture, more like it.

Once again, thanks to a much-needed throttling of Mind and Spirit doled out from the righteous grip of a mic and a choke of feedback, I’m torn to pieces, forced to redefine. Ain’t nothin’ like putting all your tissue back together again while shaking the loose sweat free from the 6-inch square you’ve been boxed into by all the other bright-eyed believers, the final squalls of “Rock & Roll Nigger” still careening against the usual drone-loop you’ve assembled for yourself to get through the day-to-day naggings of things. A good shake-up in the bone-frame ain’t bad when it’s coming to you in fits and sparks from the High Priestess of Hippie-Punk know-how – feel me?
