This riveting space exploration film has yet to be equaled by any other for its depiction of courage in the face of danger – and for sheer nail biting suspense. As astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), and Jim Swigert (Kevin Bacon) prepare to embark on the third manned moon shot in 1970, the public already was beginning to regard lift-offs at Cape Canaveral as routine. But everything changed when three-quarters of the way to the moon, an explosion sent the Apollo 13 craft into an uncontrolled spin and left the astronauts with a rapidly dwindling supply of oxygen and power. Director Ron Howard’s dramatic account of the astronauts’ bravery and their ship’s rescue is fraught with action, anxiety and emotion, as the plight of the astronauts is linked to the fears and hopes of their earthbound colleagues and families. Paramount Movie Classics include live Wurlitzer organ serenade, Dec-O-Win raffle, newsreel, cartoon and previews.
