The new 49ers stadium in Santa Clara doesn’t exactly have financing yet and it’s not clear if the Niners will be sharing with the Oakland Raiders, but don’t worry — you can get on the waiting list to buy tickets today! Check out all the pretty pictures of Google Park or Twitter Tax Break Stadium or maybe — more appropriately — Silicon Valley Power Park, since it was the extra cash generated by Santa Clara’s public power agency that made all of this possible.
The reality is that San Francisco won’t lose much — and Santa Clara won’t gain much — from this deal. Niners fans are tailgaters; they bring their own food and beer, consume in the parking lot, and drive away after the game. The economic development benefits that the city got from the Giants stadium — built to minimize and disperse parking so people would walk or take public transit — are huge (although the displacement of low-end housing and manufacturing from that area were part of the deal). Not so with a football park next to the freeway in Silicon Valley.
No way to get there by train, but as long as you look burning gas, you can sign up for tickets now.
